An early string of success appearances in popular television series led to her becoming popular for her role in the show on Ally McBeal, where she was Ling Woo. In the wake of her popularity, she was offered important parts in Shanghai Noon (1998) and Charlie's Angels (2000). Her next performance was a dazzling performance in the role of Japanese crime lord O-Ren Ishii in QT's Kill Bill Volume 1. She also played leading parts in box office flops such as Rise: Blood Hunter. For animated films such as Kung Fu Panda, Tinker Bell as well as others, she voiced prominent characters. Mia Mason, in Cashmere Mafia as well as other smaller-screen roles failed to bring her any kind of success. Southland is a critically-acclaimed series of crime dramas that had Liu playing recurring roles, helped her reestablish her role as an actress.
